Description of Course:

  • Writing—Writing is one of the most valuable skills you can develop while in high school.We will practice multiple types of writing throughout the semester to prepare you for many future situations in which the ability to write well is essential.

     

  • Literature—We will read, analyze, and respond to various texts written by authors of many different nationalities throughout the course of history.

     

  • Grammar—Good communication is greatly enhanced by an understanding of complex grammatical concepts.We will learn how to apply these concepts not just to questions from the grammar book, but more importantly, to your speaking and writing.

 

“Literary texts studied in the high school classroom are complex, higher level texts which may contain mature content and themes. ‘Mature Content’ may include, but is not limited to pervasive strong language, disturbing violence and behavior, sexual acts, drug/alcohol use or references, controversial content or culturally diverse themes. These books are selected based on their literacy merit and will be studies through their historical and cultural context. Our instructional purpose is to expose students to perspectives unlike or in opposition to their own in order to analyze complex themes and to promote individual reflection and academic growth.”

Materials Needed:

  • Pencils and pens (always have something to write with)

     

  • 1 – 3-ring binder with pockets OR College Ruled Notebook (1-3 subject)

     

  • Loose leaf paper

     

  • Several packs of index cards

     

  • 1 Subject notebook

     

  • Highlighter

*Required Projects/Assignments:

  • Daily attendance, cooperation, and participation are essential for students to become involved in the learning process. Accountability, contributing when needed, and sharing with others; listening and delivering oral responses to the literature selections are essential aspects of class participation.

     

  • Independent reading will be assigned.You are responsible for completing and understanding the reading before coming to class the day it is due.Use the resources available to you if you need help, but you must take responsibility for knowing the material.The only person who can guarantee your success is you.

Grading Policy:

Students should focus on completing quality work on each assignment. If this is done, they should not have to fret over grades. However, if a student fails to complete assignments (or does them half-heartedly), he/she should learn to accept the consequences of the choices made.

All major writing assignments and projects will be evaluated with a set rubric that students will have prior access to.

Students are encouraged to keep all graded papers returned in the pockets of their notebook as well as maintaining a log to record grades.

Homework Policy:

Homework is an integral part of the curriculum. Students may be required to complete from one to four hours of work outside of class per week, depending on the type of assignment, individual abilities, and the amount of time spent on the task during the class period. All assignments must be completed and turned in by the due date to receive full credit. LATE WORK (assignments that are not turned in when I ask for them) will be accepted but will be reduced in score by ten points for each day it is late. If an assignment is more than three days late, it will not be scored higher than a 70%.

Make-up Work Policy:

Students are required to submit make-up work for excused absences. Make-up work for unexcused absences is at the teacher’s discretion.

Reteach/Retest:

For any test or quiz below 75%, students may retake that test or quiz one time. The highest score a student may receive on a retest is 75%. Note: There may be certain assignments (i.e. projects or final drafts of essays) to which the reteach/retest policy will not apply.

Rough Drafts vs. Final Drafts:

Rough drafts are typically counted as quiz grades and are graded primarily for completion; the purpose of a rough draft is to receive feedback as part of the writing process. Therefore, it is entirely possible, and even likely, that students may receive a higher grade on their rough drafts than on their final drafts.

Cheating:

Any student who is confirmed to be cheating will automatically receive a zero on that assignment. This includes copying and/or plagiarism on written assignments. The ability to redo, rewrite, requiz, or retest is at my discretion, depending on the nature of the infraction.

Behavioral Expectations:

It is imperative that you know what is expected of you in this class.

  • Adhere to all River Mill rules and regulations.

     

  • Respect yourself and others.

     

  • Be prepared to learn (both by having required materials and an open mind).

     

  • Help maintain the classroom (no eating, throw away trash, put class materials back properly)

     

  • No movement from the room for the first and last fifteen minutes of class.

     

  • Cell phones and other electronics should be turned off during class and not visible.
