About Mrs. Surratt

Hello! If you are looking at this webpage, chances are you are in one of my classes this year. I am excited to have you here and I am looking forward to a year of learning!

Because we will be spending a lot of time together, I will introduce myse
lf a little here.

I received my master’s degree in teaching from UNCG and my bachelor’s degree in English from NC State. This is my second year at River Mill Academy and I am thrilled to be back!

I live in Burlington with my husband Darren and our two cats, Zoey and Pumpkin. You will probably hear a lot about them this year! When I'm not teaching, I am either reading mystery or dystopian novels, watching crime shows or documentaries on Netflix, spending time with my family, or drinking coffee and browsing the aisles of Target.

You should also know this about me: I love to be myself and encourage my students to find their own individuality and embrace it. We are all wonderfully different, and those differences are what makes each one of us unique. Therefore, do not be afraid to be who you are.

Middle school is an exciting time of great personal and academic growth; that means we need to support and encourage each other in every way that we can.

In this classroom, we will love each other like family (because we're stuck with each other for the next 180 days, whether you like it or not!).

The bottom line here is: don't ever make someone feel bad about who they are (and never feel bad about who you are!).

"Be somebody who makes everybody feel like a somebody."
